What 25/50/25 means

The Indiana BMV describes minimum liability amounts of $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage in one accident. These are limits for the specified liability protections, not a promise that every loss will be paid.

A serious accident can create costs beyond those amounts. Review available limits against your household responsibilities and financial circumstances rather than treating the minimum as a personalized recommendation.

Ask separately about other protections

Liability coverage addresses certain obligations to others. It is different from protection for damage to your own vehicle, eligible medical expenses, or injuries involving an uninsured or underinsured driver.

The Indiana Department of Insurance states that newly written auto liability policies must include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless rejected in writing. Ask how the rule applies and review the limits and choices on your policy. Medical payments coverage is a separate, optional protection for eligible medical expenses. Ask who is covered, what limit applies and how it works with other coverage.

Keep proof and policy status clear

Keep current insurance information available and respond to insurer or BMV requests through the appropriate process. If proof of financial responsibility or a compliance filing is requested, follow the current instructions from the BMV and the agency.

For changes, renewals, or a new vehicle, confirm the effective date and the status of coverage. Requesting a quote or booking a conversation does not meet that confirmation step.
