Comparing term and permanent life insurance costs

Compare term and permanent life insurance by purpose, duration, premium requirements, cash-value features and guarantees rather than a monthly price alone.

Term and permanent life insurance can serve different purposes. Comparing the monthly payment without comparing the job each policy is intended to do can lead to an incomplete decision.

Use the guide to prepare questions. Your actual options depend on the policy, insurer, and your circumstances.

Compare the purpose before the price

Term coverage is arranged for a specified period. Permanent coverage is designed to last for life if its funding requirements and policy conditions are met, and may include cash value. The product labels alone do not tell you the complete costs or guarantees.

Identify whether you are discussing a temporary financial responsibility, a longer-term protection goal, or another need. Ask the agency to explain why a proposed policy fits that purpose.

Put the policy design beside the premium

Term and permanent insurance can serve different time horizons. Comparing their first payment alone misses how long protection may last and what must happen to keep it in place. Review the actual contract and illustration, including any guaranteed and nonguaranteed elements.

Read what happens over time

For term coverage, ask about the end of the term, any renewal or conversion provision, and the costs and deadlines involved. For permanent coverage, understand the required funding, charges, guarantees, and circumstances that could cause the policy to lapse.

If an illustration includes non-guaranteed results, keep them separate from guarantees. A projection is not a promise. Loans and withdrawals can affect values, benefits, and how the policy performs.

Consider changes carefully

If you already have life insurance, compare what you would give up as well as what a new option offers. New underwriting, surrender charges, and new policy provisions can affect a replacement decision.

Bring existing documents to a conversation with John. The agency can help explain insurance options; investment, legal, or tax questions may require an appropriately qualified professional. The best comparison makes both the purpose and the obligations understandable.

A hypothetical family decision

A household may want protection through the years when children depend on income and a mortgage remains. That is a time-horizon question to bring to an advisor. A different household may have an ongoing support responsibility that does not end on a predictable date. It deserves its own discussion.

Neither example establishes that a particular product is right for you. Ask the advisor to explain how the amount, duration, cost, and ability to maintain the policy fit the need you described. Keep the comparison focused on protection rather than assuming cash value is equivalent to a bank account or a guaranteed investment.
